Washington DC is bordered by the states of Virginia and Maryland. It is the home of all three arms of the United States Government. The district has a resident population of 588,292 (as of 2007), but its size during a normal workday expands to over a million people. Washington DC's primary business is that of running the country, but other entities also employ people in the area. Law firms, lobbying firms, non-profit organizations and professional groups make their home in the district and employ approximately 85% of the work force. Washington DC is seeing increases in areas not affiliated with the government. Education, finance, scientific research and public policy are all blooming in the metropolitan area.
