Michigan, the 26th state, is the Great Lakes State. It is bordered by Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota, and Canada. Most notable are Michigan's two distinct peninsulas, connected by the Mackinac Bridge. The state capital is Lansing, while Detroit is the largest city. Known for automobile production, tourism, farming, and furniture, Michigan is 56,804 square miles in area, and is populated by 10,120,860 (as of 2005). It holds records as first and largest in dozens of categories, and was home to President Gerald R. Ford. Two major Big 10 universities are Michigan State University and the University of Michigan.
